What E-Mail Viewer do you recommend? We do not recommend a specific browser but the E-Mail Viewer which works well is Thunderbird from Mozilla.org. It is a very reliable mail browser which is updated regularly and is more secure than most other Viewers. What is a domain MX record and how do I alter it? A domain MX record directs the emails addressed to your domain to a mail server. They are held as part of your domain's DNS record, and can be changed by all good DNS providers. To start using mailCustodian service your domain MX records must point to our servers: MX Preference 10 -> MX1.MAILCUSTODIAN.CO.UK MX Preference 20 -> MX2.MAILCUSTODIAN.CO.UK MX Preference 30 -> MX3.MAILCUSTODIAN.CO.UK MX Preference 40 -> MX4.MAILCUSTODIAN.CO.UK We recommend the above usage as many Spammers use the failsafe server as a means of bypassing the Spam catching services. The above settings help fool Spammers and improve reliability. How can I view my domain's MX record? You can make use of the Windows nslookup utility, choose 'Start', 'Run', and enter nslookup. When the command window appears, you need to enter set type=MX and then enter your domain e.g. foo.com In the text returned you should see four lines like this:
foo.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx1.mailcustodian.co.uk foo.com MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = mx2.mailcustodian.co.uk foo.com MX preference = 30, mail exchanger = mx3.mailcustodian.co.uk foo.com MX preference = 40, mail exchanger = mx4.mailcustodian.co.uk
What Servers/IPs Should I Allow Through My Firewall The following servers and their IP addresses should be allowed through firewalls, for at least the following ports 25,110,143,587 - lon1.mailcustodian.co.uk : 80.253.102.10
- lon3.mailcustodian.co.uk : 80.253.102.11
- lon4.mailcustodian.co.uk : 80.253.102.13
- lon5.mailcustodian.co.uk : 80.253.124.88
- lon6.mailcustodian.co.uk : 80.253.124.84
- nyc1.mailcustodian.co.uk : 208.116.11.58
- nyc2.mailcustodian.co.uk : 65.98.81.64

Dial Up Networking When using a standard dial up connection, care must be taken to ensure that all mail passes through MailCustodian's mail server. It is possible with some Dial Up ISP's, such as Wanadoo and BT Openworld, for there to be a proxy mail server that will send mail without it being virus or SPAM checked.
If you are unsure whether you are using MailCustodian's incoming mail server, we recommend sending mail via the Webmail system. All mails sent via the Webmail system are checked as standard for viruses.
It is possible to send mail via our other SMTP port of 587 but this requires the use of SMTP-auth. What About Spam? We do not sell details of your addresses to databases or targetting agencies. Be careful where you use your email address and your account should stay clear of spam. All mail that we process goes through a variety of spam services that help to reduce the level of Spam. These can be activated via the webadministration screens. What are Aliases? Aliases are effectively email re-directs. Many companies are expected to have standard addresses like info@foo.com, sales@foo.com, or support@foo.com - by using aliases you can make these mails re-direct to the relevant salesman, engineer etc. You can re-direct to a completely different domain, for example a client site email address.
If possible we recommend that you do not use the default CATCH ALL rule as this reduces the effectivness of our SPAM services.
How do I use the 'Add User Alias' admin page? This page is to re-direct mails from an alias in a domain that you admin to another address. Firstly you must enter to the alias and the domain (from the pull down), and then the destination. E.g. enter alias sales for domain foo.com and then the destination frank@foo.com
How are the number of users in my domain calculated? This is simply the number of mailboxes that you have on our servers, and the number of aliases you have to a completely different domain, i.e. a domain not hosted by mailCustodian. The main service that we supply is the virus checking of incoming and outgoing email, and since email aliases that get re-directed to a different domain still get scanned they must count towards your purchased total of users. Aliases that re-direct mail to mailboxes within your domain do not count as extra users.
What is the 'default rule' admin tool? This tool allows the domain admin to choose what happens to mail that comes into a domain and does not match any mailboxes or aliases. The mail can either be bounced back to the sender, as is normal policy for most large companies. However if you run a small business you may want to deliver this mail a delegated person, who can identify who it was intended for. If possible we recommend that you do not use the default CATCH ALL rule as this reduces the effectivness of our SPAM services.
How do I use the 'Set Default Rule' admin page? From the scrolling lists simply choose the domain you wish to set the rule for, and then select either: bounce (to return incorrectly addressed mail) or one of the given mailboxes.
